Recent evidence suggests that changes in the metabolic fate of homocysteine, leading to hyperhomocysteinemia, may also play a role in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Parkinson's disease (PD). The nervous system might be particularly sensitive to homocysteine, due to the excitotoxic-like properties of the amino acid.

It is characterised primarily by the loss Parkinson disease. Their expression levels were higher in the PD patients with mild cogni-tive dysfunction and both showed a remarkably positive correlation. The scientific literature contains a multitude of papers linking homocysteine to poor health. Elevated homocysteine levels have been linked to cardiovascular disorders, an increased risk of fractures in the elderly and to neurological conditions. Parkinson’s Disease is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. It is characterised primarily by the loss

The solution is a simple blood test and adding more bio-active B-vitamins if homocysteine is elevated. Scientifically reviewed by: Andrew Roberts Jr., MPH in Global Health, MS in Medical Health, on January 2020. Written By Susan Lane. A reminder about Parkinson’s, dopamine and carbidopa/levodopa: Someone with Parkinson’s has reduced synthesis of dopamine, an essential neurotransmitter produced by the substantia nigra of the midbrain region.

Homocysteine (Hcy) has been implicated as a risk factor for vascular disease as well as brain atrophy. There is evidence to implicate Hcy in increased oxidative stress, DNA damage, the triggering of apoptosis and excitotoxicity, all important mechanisms in neurodegeneration.
